About Us

Swami Vivekananda always calls us to sacrifice our little selves for the “WORSHIP OF LIVING GOD,” who is visualized as a human being. There is a proverb: “Many are called, but few are chosen.” Many are called, but only a few can respond to that clarion call; only a few have the courage and purity of heart to offer themselves at the altar of this sacrificial fire of unselfish dedication.

In the year 1994, a few people responded to the call of Swami Vivekananda and came into contact with some of the monks of the Ramakrishna Mission, who inspired and ignited light in them to work for the upliftment of the poor and needy people of villages in and around West Bengal and other states. The late Shyamapada Mitra (Kanchan), along with some like-minded people, started working in the spirit of Swami Vivekananda’s saying, “THE WORLD IS BURNING WITH MISERY, CAN YOU SLEEP?” They began operating in the backward areas of West Bengal for the betterment and upliftment of the poor and destitute people. Gradually, the work spread over many districts of West Bengal. This work had a positive impact on the lives of the residents for a decade, without any official name or organization.

Over the years, the Vivekananda Foundation has built a network of NGOs located in various downtrodden and underdeveloped areas of West Bengal, India. Currently, there are about 14 other NGOs associated with the Vivekananda Foundation.
